Welcome Mullen Families!
We would like to take this opportunity to welcome parents and students to the 2009-10 school year. We hope that our Mullen families have had a restful and enjoyable summer and look forward to working closely together for another successful school year. Our students did exceptionally well last spring on the Standards of Learning tests and we expect continued academic growth for this school year. Our students made Adequate Yearly Progress and we remain a fully accredited school. We met all Virginia State Standards and feel confident that we will maintain our status as a School of Excellence.
It’s hard to believe that fall has arrived and students are back in classrooms busy learning and making new friends. We have many exciting things happening at Mullen this year. We encourage parents to become active in our P.T.O, Mullen Advisory Council (MAC) and take advantage of the many opportunities to volunteer time and expertise to support our students. Parents are also encouraged to check the school website frequently to find out about the exciting events planned for the school and in the classrooms.
Our teachers and staff members have been busy planning and preparing challenging and interesting opportunities to meet the learning needs of our diverse student population. There are more than 30 different languages spoken by students at our school and there are more than 26 different Nationalities. We are fortunate to have the opportunity to work with families from many different backgrounds.
One new strategy our school is implementing this year to meet the needs of our diverse population is Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (S.I.O.P). This is a research based and exciting approach to making content comprehensible for English learners while at the same time developing English language skills. The S.I.O.P Model serves as an instructional framework under which other effective instructional approaches reside such as cooperative learning, and differentiated instruction (Echevarria, Vogt, and Short, 2008). This method is a scientifically validated model of sheltered instruction designed to make grade level academic content understanding for English learners. We are confident that this model of learning will assist in our continuous journey for excellence.
Welcome to wonderful year at Mullen Elementary School!
